動後や暑い時にスポーツ飲料など糖質を含む飲料水をがぶ飲みする習慣があり、「のどが異常に渇き多量の水分を欲する」「急激に体重が減少した」などの症状
が出た場合、「ソフトドリンクケトーシス（ペットボトル症候群）」の疑いがある。急性の糖尿病で、重症になると意識障害を起こすことがある。
仕組
みは完全に解明されていないが、ソフトドリンクをたくさん飲み続けて血糖値が高まると強い渇きを覚え多尿にもなり、さらに飲み続けるため高血糖が進むとい
う悪循環が生じる。糖分の代謝を促すインスリンの効果や分泌が低下し、ケトン体と呼ぶ物質が血液中に増え過ぎると意識がもうろうとしてくる。

くて肥満体形の男性に多いと言われているが中高年にも起きる場合がある」（東京女子医科大学糖尿病センターの岩本安彦センター長）。治療は「脱水の改善と
インスリン注射による高血糖の改善が不可欠」だが、効果が出れば「インスリン治療の継続が必要な場合は少なく、食事や運動で制御も可能」という。
清涼飲料の多用は避け、水やお茶にするなどの注意が必要だ。
